Organization of the Standards

ACHC International Standards are structured to ensure ease of use for both client organizations and surveyors.

  • Logical Grouping: Standards are organized into sections based on critical organizational functions and systems, such as governance, patient safety, clinical quality, infection prevention, and facility management.
  • Clear Identification: Each standard is clearly labeled for easy navigation. Users can quickly locate relevant content and cross-reference related elements.
  • Numbering System: A systematic numbering framework has been implemented to distinguish between standards and their criteria, enabling precise reference and communication during self-assessments, surveys, and corrective action planning.
  • Design Based on Feedback: The framework has been evaluated and refined through feedback from client organizations and surveyors. Input from these stakeholders has ensured the standards are user-friendly and relevant to diverse healthcare environments.
  • Clarity of Language: ACHC International emphasizes clear, unambiguous language in writing the standards. This is achieved through:
» Simple Wording: Each standard uses clear subjects and objects to define what is required and who is responsible, avoiding ambiguous terms.
» Formal Review Process: A rigorous review is conducted to identify and clarify wording that could lead to multiple interpretations. This process includes internal and external evaluations involving clinical and operational experts and beta testing of standards prior to final adoption.
» Interpretive Guidance: Explanatory notes in the form of Required Elements and supplementary materials to assist users in interpreting and applying the standards appropriately.
» Minimizing Acronyms: Acronyms are used sparingly, and any included are accompanied by full explanations at the first use to ensure understanding.
